The only thing that led him to leave the border was his desire to study and to become a priest. That however, was enough for the communist regime to sentence him for 12 years in prison. Not even harsh conditions in Jáchymov mines and constant persecution by the Secret State Police did not deter him from his effort to search for a common language which would be acceptable for both sides.
