1. May. 1951
During the period of Cold War, Radio Free Europe was an important tool, which brought people of eastern Europe uncensored information and brought a breath of freedom. It was precisely why it became one of the biggest enemies of the communist regime. The National Committee for Free Europe, which put as its goal to gather financial assets and organise a new radio station, was created on 1st June 1949. The radio station had two headquarters – New York, where the board of directors of the entire Radio Free Europe sat, and in Munich, where there was the main broadcasting staff. The official broadcast for listeners in Czechoslovakia began from Munich on the 1st of May 1951. In 1992 the Czechoslovak editorial split into Czech and Slovak. In the same year a separate Slovak editorial was created in Bratislava. The broadcast for Czech and Slovak Republic ended definitively after 51 years, on the 30th September 2002.
