Victims of Communism Memorial Day
Victims of Communism Memorial Day
24. June. 1955
Only after three decades from the fall of communism, Slovakia hit a milestone, since it will remember victims of this totalitarian regime. The day fell on the 24th June, when, 66 years prior, Slivester Krčméry, who was sentenced unfairly admitted to the power of the regime, but did not let them take his truth. The Victims of Communism Memorial Day is tied to a name of a person who, while apparently power-less, stood up to the communist regime. Despite his non-compliance when interrogated, he was still sentenced for 14 years of prison. He still stood his ground and, in his defence, stated that it was not he, who is accused but it is the Church itself, yet she cannot defend herself. Krčméry is also a symbol of overarching national stand. Together with Krčméry, Jozef Suchý, a son of a Greek-Catholic priest was also sentenced for the same crimes. Jozef Suchý was sentenced to 10 years of prison, 5 years of loss of citizen rights and confiscation of property.
