03. July. 1949
The radio was founded in 1929, shortly after the beginning of a sovereign city-state of Vatican. The first broadcast, on the 12th February 1931 was started by Pius XI. himself with a Latin speech. The programme was centred mainly on better access to speeches, encyclicals and other activities of the Pope. It also took care of informing about the life of Slovaks in the free world, about the pilgrimages of Slovaks to Rome and many other important events regarding the life of the catholic Church. The communist regime had a very negative view of the fact that the Vatican Radio informed about the persecutions of the Church and believers in Slovakia and other communist countries. During the period of communism, the broadcasting of Vatican radio in Slovak language was among the most listened to, and especially during the second half of the 1980s helped with the activization of believers.
